Battalion Chief James W. Dumas died Friday,  November 30.
His daughter Karen advises that:

A memorial service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church on Saturday, 8 December, at 11:00 a.m.
Following the memorial service a reception will be held at the Alexandria Fire & EMS Training Academy, 1108 Jefferson Street.

All are invited to the service and the reception.
 

James W. Dumas was hired by the Alexandria Fire Department on May 1, 1957, as a firefighter. He left the department for service in the United States Army on July 6, 1959, and returned to the department July 19, 1961. He was promoted to Fire Alarm Dispatcher January 29, 1964.  On February 10, 1965, he was promoted to lieutenant and then captain on August 7, 1968. He served as a captain until December 17, 1975, when he was promoted to battalion chief. He served both as an administrative battalion chief and in the field as commander of Suppression shifts. Chief Dumas retired on July 1, 1986, having served for 27 years as a member of the Alexandria Fire Department

AFD Officers Lay Wreath at Tomb of the Unknowns

On the final day of the GO-First Camp 2007, members of the Alexandria Fire Department laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery.  Those participating were:  EMS Supervisor Lisa Jones, Captain Rodney Masser, Captain Thurston McClain, and Lieutenant Christopher Kunkle

July 19, 2007 C shift responded to a fire at the Wendy's  299 S. Van Dorn Street.  Engine 208 arrived on scene with a smoke and fire showing.  Battalion 212 went to exterior attack due to the amount of fire in attic space and the large A/C units on the roof.   A second alarm and level 2 R.I.T. was added to the assignment.

Firefighter Rich Pates being interviewed by Kim Martucci during the channel 9 news.  She spent the morning with station 206 during the channel 9 broadcast.  The crews did a great job promoting the fire department.  Captain Perry and crew gave the AFD more positive exposure in a morning than we have had in years.

At 1430 hours Engine 207, Medic 207 and EMS 231 responded for injuries from an assault, possibly three patient.  Units were advised to stage.  When units arrived in staging a report was received that at 227 Yale Dr the house was now on fire.  Fire communications advised units and filled the assignment.  Engine 207 marked on scene with smoke showing and dropped a supply line.  Engine 207 began an aggressive attack.  The next unit to arrive was R206 that was in the area.  R206 performed primary searches on all floors.  The fire went to two alarms and units operated in the same block as the original call.  EMS 231 and 232 operated with three medic units to handle the original call and monitored the fire channel to direct the other two medic units operating there.

The local 2141 and the Alexandria Fire Department with deep regret announce the passing of ECT Susan Thomas.  ECT Thomas was a 22 year veteran of the department and worked in the communications division. 

 

 

PG Rescue 47 involved in crash.  All four firefighters Medi-vac to hospital along with 3 civilians.  Engine 205, Medic 205 and 207 assisted.  R206 was called for but was placed in service due to the heavy traffic to get to scene.

B Shift: Rescue and Engine 411 assisted 5th Battalion units on a apartment fire that eventually went to 3 alarms.
Rescue 411 went on the first alarm and was the first specialty unit to the top floor of a well involved attic fire. Crew under direction of Lt. Woolf forced entry in 4 units and performed primary search of entire floor (negative results).
Engine 411 was called as 1st engine on the second. Technician Hayes handled the staging area while the crew reported to side Adam.
All crews were pulled temporarily while Tower 5 opened up with master streams. After the fire was knocked down the engine was assigned to the top floor for final extinguishment of the involved attic area.
The fire was caused by improper discharge of smoking materials on a top floor balcony and damaged estimated over $2.5 million. 12 families were displaced.

B Shift - At 20:55 hrs units from the 6th battalion and Alexandria City Fire Department were dispatched to box 1138 for smoke coming from a 3 story garden apartment in the 3000blk of Furman Ln. E411 (Capt Garcia)arrived on scene with smoke showing from side Adam. E411 transferred command and stretched an 1 3/4 line to apartment #202. R411 entered the apartment and during the aggressive interior search located a victim in a front bedroom. He was removed to awaiting EMS units. E207 arrived and established command. T411 laddered and vented. E409 stretched the back up line to the fire apartment E205 was the R.I.T . BFC406-B (Chief Ellmore)arrived and assumed command and requested the 2nd due to the multiple occupied dwelling.
Units had trouble locating the fire until
units vented sufficiently. The fire was located in the kitchen / dining room area with some extension into the void spaces to the third floor. E411 quickly knocked the fire down. Command held all 1st alarm units for overhaul and checking for further extension. Command held E411, T411 to assist the F.M releasing the rest of the assignment.

B Shift: Units from Fairfax and Alexandria FD were sent to the 5800 block of Piedmont Drive. Early reports indicated a working fire. E437 arrived with smoke showing and fire in the basement. BC405 struck a second alarm early into operations.
The fire had a good headway on the basement with extension to the floor above. The fire extended to the carport area on side Baker involving an auto. Units went to defensive positions and multiple hand lines were put into operation.
E411 assisted as fourth due engine with the assigned RIT. The crew positioned on side Adam and assisted in fireground duties.
E411 is normally sixth due on the box but E405 and E422 were tied up on other runs.

Fire Chief Gary Mesaris announced his retirement from the Alexandria Fire Department effective Feb 28, 2007.  He will be the fire chief of MWAA starting on March 5.  The city manager has named Assistant Chief Russell Middleton the interim Chief.
